About / Donate to The Arc
Welcome! My name is Xiaoyu and I’m a student at the University of Michigan. Over the summer of 2007, I biked across America from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia to raise money for The Arc of the United States. The Arc is this outstanding organization which supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This website chronicles my adventures so feel free to look around, and if you like what you see, please consider making a contribution to my organization at www.firstgiving.com/xiaoyu.
Also be sure to take a look at my final note: The End…
For archival purposes, this is the pre-trip version of this About page:
Welcome! My name is Xiaoyu and I’m a student at the University of Michigan. Over the course of the summer, I’ll be biking across America from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia along the TransAm Trail. I’m going on this trip to raise money for The Arc of the United States, an organization that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I hope that my experiences will allow me to learn more about myself and the country I grew up in. This website will document my adventures. Feel free to look around, and if you like what you see, please consider making a contribution to my organization at www.firstgiving.com/xiaoyu.
Thanks for your support!

Xiaoyu,
Your trip sounds wonderful. Truthfully, I’m envious even though it looks from the GT photo that you’re carrying camping gear, so this won’t be a luxury trip.
Alice Ann (aae@peak.org) and I have done done enough biking to understand what you’re facing. We wish you strong tail winds and no dogs.
Best wishes,
Michael Sherwin

What a great adventure! Take it easy, stop and smell the flowers.

Hello Xiaoyu,
First and foremost, congratulations on completing this journey…I am currently a graduate student at the University of Connecticut…my friend and I are planning on doing the exact same thing this summer, and I was hoping to get some advice from you…Did the charity sponsor you for the entire trip?…how did you go about setting up the donation system?…did you have to search for a charity that would fund you, or was it fairly straightforward?…the bottom line is we would like to do it in an effort to raise money, but we are both starving college kids without the funds to pay for the trip ourselves…please send me an e-mail whenever you get a chance. Again, congratulations…You are certainly an inspiring figure for me. Sincerely, Louis Jones

Awesome trip — I just walked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail this past summer (Five months, 2663 miles) and am looking to take another giant trip. The first one was too amazing. Definitely interested in doing a cross-country cycle trip — I’ll be checking out your journal!

Hi Xiaoyu,
I’m a fellow Wolverine heading out on a bike tour of the Pacific coast this August. I was hoping to pick your brain about some of the logistics of doing a long tour. Hit me up by email if you’re free: […]
Thanks!
